5) Composing / Arranging

With Leon Lhoest.  Today I had a more or less spontaneous meeting inspired by Sabine Kühlich and Sigrid Paans, who suggested to also think about what I could still add to my study list. And we came up with the idea to meet Leon. The result is, that I will join his class for this semester. Brilliant. Today we talked a bit about Bill Evans compositions´. Namely "Time Remembered". I made some short notes, the topics will be discussed deeper in the course.  Notes: "Melodic Driven Harmony". Deal with harmony the way you deal with melodies. Josef Demoulin. Messiaen. Check youtube channels, a lot of information is just out there. Berklee College Online Courses. No tonal center.  Ex.: Take two chords. Any. Transpose them anywhere. Several times. Also invert the order of the chords. Composition for the duo "Take Me To Nirvana": Type it to Sibelius. To better check the rhythmic relations. On top of an established structure imagine an "outsid...

4) James Moody // "Moody"

An incredible saxophone player and singer.  In his singing I can hear his saxophone playing as well. There are these jodel-like passages. I love them! I want to practice and add the song "Moody" to my personal repertoire.  Especially to the repertoire of the Brubeck Duo with Sabine Kühlich. Since Moody interesting wise is a composition of Dave Brubeck! James Moody, what an incredible soul was inside of this guy!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe49P8u0nEk https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Moody_(Saxophonist)

3) Ok, let the games begin.

Ok, let the games begin. Let´s work concentrated at things, let's write, get a routine, get into the process of the master thesis. On the one hand side this journal will display the process of my research for the master in music that I undertake now.  This journal shall as well store interesting links and inspirations, that I want to continue with later on. So to say I am installing a digital music diary.  Even after I will have finished my studies for the master in music I can go back to this collected memory whenever I find time to enhance my musicianship.  I think I will work with colors to specify the two different roles of the text. For now I stick to a black/average appearance for the texts concerning the master thesis. A light blue will be the links and thoughts of general inspirations, that I collect.

1) Inspiration: Believe In What You Do! Esperanza Spalding. Interview.

Stumbled upon. Interesting to gain some more insight into her process: http://www.jazzdimensions.de/interviews/the_world/2011/esperanza_spalding.html I admire the work Esperanza Spalding does. She is a very versatile artist and  the different aspects and forms of her work seem to be well accepted by herself as well as others. An excerption from the article is about her work with the saxophonist Joe Lovano. Esperanza Spalding had doubts about her role in the band and if she was good enough for the band. Lovano assured her, that if someone asks you to be in his band, he already trusts your abilities. And he advised her to play what she felt and to be herself in the music. And I liked the last thought of Esperanza to develop an approach where you trust in the music that comes out of your inspiration, not trying to do what others did before you or what you think other people expect of you. And that this trust in your...
