30) Sandaya - Burmese Piano

Here I collected some interesting links of Burmese Piano players, which give an impressive insight into this style. I gain some inspiration out of this for my work as well at the end of the post.

In 2016 in Burma I bought two books with scores for  Sandaya, the Burmese piano.

The piano has quite a history in Myanmar.
It came with the colonial times. Soon the Burmese people integrated the piano into their music and developed an own style.
In the beginning they tuned the pianos to their traditional tunings. Which must have been a lot of work. But soon it changed and the Burmese started tuning their original instruments in a more or less well-tempered tuning. Imitating the piano.

One more video, where you can also find a form of musical notation, that for us is not understandable. It is a chinese notation system.

Wow, watch what this kid can do.

When you see this youngster play you realize that this piano style is not something you can just do. It is a cultural heritage with a lot of musical parameters that are very specific and belong to a complete music tradition. It needs practicing and yearning for mastership from an early age on.

I also want to write a composition, that will be more of a patchwork. Or should I better say I want to arrange a song, maybe it is even more of a medley...

Different musical aspects come together:

- Burmese piano (solo by Laia). I take this part from one of the books.

Below is the part I want to work at. I will not play it as a whole tune, but in passages.

- Burmese singing tradition, Laia solo vocal, a transcribed part of an existing burmese piece leads to a new melody, combination of motives, that I compose.

It is possible to start solo and then add the drum circle with an own melody.
Somehow I had to think of a certain color of Maria Joao in this context:

She starts singing at around 1:52. >inspiration.
